April 10, 2025

Sustainable Seafood Awards 2025 Winners Unveiled.

The Sustainable Seafood Awards Australia recognise organisations and individuals who make significant contributions towards ensuring we will have fish forever by supporting responsible aquaculture and sustainable fishing practices. The annual awards are run by the Marine Stewardship Council in partnership with the Aquaculture Stewardship Council.

Australians care deeply about making food choices that are better for the environment, and the work of these award winners reflects that growing demand. The commitment from brands and retailers to source and sell ASC-certified food is crucial to ensuring responsible aquaculture practices.

ALDI has emerged as Australia’s leading supermarket for sustainable seafood after winning three 2025 Sustainable Seafood Awards: Best Responsible Seafood Retailer, Aquaculture Champion and Best Responsible Seafood Trader presented by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC).

Duncan Leadbitter, Market Development Manager Australia and New Zealand for the ASC said “ALDI is leading the charge when it comes to providing responsibly sourced products at an affordable and accessible price point.”

Daniel Baker, Director – National Sustainability said “these wins are a fantastic endorsement of the work ALDI is doing to make sustainable seafood choices more accessible for all Australians. To win three Aquaculture Stewardship Council awards, including the Best Responsible Retailer for the third year in a row, reflects the effort and commitment of our team to work with globally recognised certification bodies to source seafood products responsibly. We’re proud to offer everyday value on our fish and seafood products without compromising on taste, quality or the planet. This means ALDI customers can be confident they’re making a good difference every time they shop with us.”

I+J was crowned Best Responsible Seafood Brand, for the second year in a row, boasting over 40% of their product range as ASC labelled.

Yumbah Aquaculture won the coveted Responsible Seafood Producer award for its regenerative approach and engagement with local communities and First Nations stakeholders. Rebecca Pedler of Yumbah Aquaculture in Port Lincoln, South Australia, was named Young Person in Aquaculture. Rebecca is recognised for her commitment to education and innovative research through her PhD at Flinders University in Adelaide, which aims to help the aquaculture industry navigate the challenges of climate change.

The Australian Maritime Museum was highly commended in the Aquaculture Champion category for its strong commitment to supporting the ASC and MSC missions and partnerships in previous years, as well as for its chain of custody certification for food and catering venues.
