Australia’s most sustainable seafood revealed in Sustainable Seafood Awards 2021

And the Winners are…

This year’s Sustainable Seafood Awards is hosted by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) , and commends people and organisations that are leading the way in protecting the future of our seafood. The awards were judged by a panel of highly regarded members of the sustainability and environment sectors such as Fairtrade Australia and New Zealand, Ocean Watch Australia and Ocean Future Fund.

Six awards were given along with six commendations and a lifetime achievement award was nominated to an outstanding individual at this years Sustainable Seafood Awards in Australia.

Simon Topatig from KB Food Co

KB Seafood Co receives ASC’s Best Responsible Seafood award, for it’s Australian ASC certified Yellowtail Kingfish retail product. KB Food Co was also highly commended by the ASC for being a responsible Seafood importer.

Duncan Leadbitter from the Aquaculture Stewardship Council said, “Not only do we want to recognise the aquaculture farms that are located in some of the most beautiful parts in the country, but we are also wholeheartedly impressed by the overall supply chain that has taken the extra step to ensure our seafood is responsibly sourced.”

Leading Australian food distributor, Bidfood takes ASC’s Best Seafood Importer Award due to its commitment to responsible sourcing of both domestic and imported seafood.

Coles Supermarkets gains a hat-trick of wins, receiving awards across MSC Highly Commended Sustainable Seafood Product – WA rock lobster, MSC Best Sustainable Seafood Supermarket and ASC highly commended seafood importer. 

Bill Wall from Woolworths

MSC Austral Fisheries Glacier 51 Toothfish has taken out the title as Best MSC Sustainable Seafood Product for the second year running joined with newly Marine Stewardship Council certified Fremantle Octopus range.

The MSC and ASC annual Lifetime Achievement Award is granted to Tasmanian based marine ecologist and mathematical modeller, Dr Keith Sainsbury who devoted his time working at the CSIRO for over 20 years and has made significant contributions to sustainable methods in fishery management.
